In July 2024, the Child Development Centre reclaimed the upper portion of McGhee House—a charming two-story home originally donated by Dr. Carolyn McGhee—after sharing the space to other community organizations for several years.
This transition created an opportunity to develop a new space and programming designed to support not only children in our community but their families as well. Over the course of several months, the four-room space was thoughtfully renovated, transforming it from a house into a welcoming treatment environment. The redesign includes a dedicated room for connection and circle time, an area for art and sensory play, and a gross motor room—each carefully designed to foster the right atmosphere for addressing mental health challenges in early childhood. An office space was created in the fourth room, providing a quiet and safe space for families to connect with our Child and Family Services Coordinator.
Initial renovations included leveling the floors, new windows, flooring, wall repair and paint.
Through generous support from Interior Savings/Beem Credit Union, The Prince George Community Foundation, BCACDI, PBR Enterprises and Dr. Carolyn McGhee, we are thrilled to be able to provide a beautiful space for new programming.
Spaces were designed to provide an engaging environment for peer-to-peer connection, creativity or expending extra energy.
During the spring and summer months, this space will welcome children who face challenges with social, emotional, and behavioral regulation, offering them opportunities to grow and develop essential skills through play and peer interaction.
Parents and family members will also benefit from this program by engaging in individual or group sessions focused on addressing their child’s challenging behaviors and supporting their emotional well-being.
